Invalid English in the Oxford English Dictionary here http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/calorie

noun (plural calories)

  • either of two units of heat energy:.
  • (also small calorie)(abbreviation: cal)the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water through 1°C (now usually defined as 4.1868 joules).
  • (also large calorie)(abbreviation: Cal)the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water through 1°C, equal to one thousand small calories and often used to measure the energy value of foods.
This is not valid, you cannot raise the temperature of something through 1°C, you can however raise it by 1°C.
Whilst our American cousins may have their own unique way of speaking the English language, it astonishes me to find such Americanism’s in the Oxford English Dictionary.
